Car Insurance For Poor People: What to Do If You are Short on Money

It can be tough to afford car insurance for anybody – especially when the economy is going through some major changes. If you don’t have a lot of money at the moment and consider yourself a “poor person,” you are still going to need auto insurance if you want to drive. Many people skip getting insurance because they are short on money, but if they happen to get into an accident, those same people end up in even worse financial trouble. The reason that you never want to make the mistake of driving uninsured is because: first of all, it is illegal and you could get a huge fine, and secondly, you could get sued and end up having to file for bankruptcy if you are sued.  It is always better to buy insurance than run the risk of getting locked up in the slammer without it.

What if You are Poor? There’s Still a Car Insurance Option Available

There’s no need to go out and buy a comprehensive policy when you know you cannot afford this type of coverage. If you are really short on money, but really want to have your car insured, you should first find a company that you know will offer a decent rate for coverage. The way that you can find a good rate on a policy is by shopping around and comparing rates in regards to the amount of coverage that is being promised. Go get some free quotes and then see which ones is the best deal – BUT always be aware of fake car insurance companies that may try to take advantage of you by offering a price that is oddly lower than average.

Avoid getting extra forms of coverage like collision, medical liability coverage, and settle for something cheaper like third party protection. Most people that don’t have much money will get the minimal amount of coverage, and that is completely fine. It is much better to have some coverage than to drive around with none at all. Although I have mentioned in the past that it is important to never sacrifice coverage for a low price, if you are poor, you probably are serious about getting a cheap policy. In some cases, though, you may not even need to get insurance; there are always alternative methods of travel that can be utilized.

Consider Alternative Methods of Transportation (Car Insurance Alternatives)

If you can avoid buying car insurance and have access to other means of transportation, then it would be a great idea to take advantage of those. There are a lot of alternatives that you can utilize as opposed to driving around your car. If you are able to take the city bus system, a subway system, or even ride your bike around town, you will save yourself a lot of money in both auto insurance costs and gasoline. There are really a lot of great ways that you can travel that don’t require you personally to own any insurance – so pick some of those and try to make them work. If you are really in a bad situation, you could even ask your friends and/or family members for a ride now and then instead of looking for car insurance for poor people.

Upgrade Your Coverage When You Get More Money

Chances are good that you will not be poor the rest of your life, so consider upgrading your auto insurance policy to one that offers better protection when you have the funds to do so. Most people will want to have at least collision coverage along with their third party protection. Although it is completely up to you to decide what your personal needs are, getting even a standard policy would be a huge upgrade from the bare minimum amount of coverage.  If you don’t have a job currently, you may also want to check out the information that I wrote about insurance for unemployed people to see how your price may be affected.
